Stuck in a Health Rut? Maybe Your Goals Aren’t Too Big… They’re Too Small

Written by: Lindsay Little, MS — Holistic Health Coach

Woman looking over a canyon.

You know that feeling when you’ve been working hard, doing “all the right things,” and still… nothing?

The scale’s not moving. The workouts feel harder. The motivation is gone. It’s like wading through peanut butter…and not in a fun, high-protein snack kind of way.

So what do most people do?

They shrink their goals.

They tell themselves, “Maybe I’ll just try walking once a week instead,” or “I’ll cut out dessert and see what happens.” I know I’ve been guilty of this many times over!

But here’s a radical idea:

Maybe you’re not stuck because your goals are too big. Maybe you’re stuck because they’re too small.

That’s right. Shrinking your goals might be exactly what’s keeping you spinning your wheels.

The Problem with Playing Small

Tiny tweaks sound smart. Swapping soda for diet soda. Skipping the cookie. Committing to 10 minutes of stretching before bed.

None of that is wrong. But if you’ve been stuck for a while?

Those small shifts might be keeping you locked in the same old patterns…just with a new (bigger) outfit.

Micromanaging your health with small changes can feel productive, but it’s often just a distraction from what really needs to change. You end up putting in all this effort… for crumbs of progress.

Exhausting. Frustrating. And worst of all, it makes you question your ability to change at all.

What If Bigger Goals Are Actually Easier?

This wild little mindset flip comes from the book 10x Is Easier Than 2x by Dr. Benjamin Hardy and Dan Sullivan. The title alone seems radical, and let’s be honest, maybe a little scary.

Their take?

When you set a huge goal, you’re forced to let go of what’s not working. You stop tweaking and start transforming.

Going for 2x → just makes your life more complicated.

Going for 10x → demands focus, clarity, boundaries… and honestly, freedom.

Let’s say your goal is to "lose 5 pounds." You might try cutting back on snacks, squeezing in more steps, or skipping your favorite treat.

But if your goal actually is to feel confident in your skin again, sleep through the night, and have enough energy to actually enjoy your life?

That kind of goal requires bigger moves. And guess what?

Bigger moves are often simpler. Because you stop dabbling and start committing.

How to 10x Your Health Goals (and Get Unstuck)

If you're feeling stuck, burned out, or bored with your current plan, it’s time to shake things up.

Here’s your 10x game plan:

1. Dream Big

What’s your real goal?

Not just “I want to be healthy.”

Try: “I want to wake up energized, wear clothes I love, eat without fear, and feel in control of my body again.”

That’s your 10x vision. Get clear on it.

2. Ditch What’s Not Working

Time to Marie Kondo your habits. What’s actually moving the needle?

Be honest: is that nightly glass of wine helping your sleep? Are those "light" meals leaving you starving?

This step will probably be uncomfortable, especially if some of those habits include people in your life. But discomfort is where growth starts.

3. Double Down on What Works

No more copying what your best friend or that influencer on Instagram is doing.

You need to know what your body responds to, and lean into it, hard. If you need help figuring that out, that’s literally what I do as a health coach.

And let’s be real:

Health isn’t about doing more. It’s about doing less, but better.

The Truth About Progress

If your results feel slow, it’s not because you’re broken or lazy or doing something wrong.

It might be because you’re trying to tiptoe your way to a bold goal.

That never works.

If you want bold results, you need bold action.

That doesn’t mean extremes. It means clarity, consistency, and refusing to settle for “meh.”

Your Next Move:

If you’ve been waiting for a sign to shake things up and stop playing small, this is it.

Ask yourself:

What would the 10x version of me do?

And then start showing up like her.

She’s not overwhelmed—she’s focused. She’s not afraid—she’s ready.

You’ve got this.
